I wasn’t actually familiar with this specific fairy tale, but I always thought it was fascinating how Japanese stories often incorporated mythological animals, in this case a fox that can turn into a human. The stories I usually hear about foxes involve a man marrying a beautiful woman but eventually discovering that she was really a fox. With this discovery she would either kill the husband or vanish but would always make sure that her children were looked after.
But yeah, Japanese fairy tales are fun. Also, it has some similarities to the stories about Selkies which are also fun.
